Stem cell therapy used locally in dogs

SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) -

Stem cell therapycan bea very controversial issue, but now some veterinarians are using new techniques to harvest those cells.

The cutting edge procedure helps fight degenerative diseases and has only been performed a few times in Missouri.

Experts say regenerative medicine using stem cells is a less invasive and more cost effective alternative for dogs suffering from osteoarthritis and cartilage injuries.

Googus is an 8 year old Boxer mix diagnosed with degenerative myelopathy.

This terminal disease affects the spinal cord causing loss of control in the hind legs.

"Even though they're unable to use their back legs they're still normal in their brain and they just don't understand why they can't walk," said Dr. Stephen Williams, Animal Health Center. "There's just not a good connection and transmission from the nerves to the back legs."

But new technology could slow, if not stop, its progression. Dr. Williams is using stem cell therapy to counteract this and other degenerative diseases in dogs.

"The stem cells from the patient are the ones that are going to benefit that same patient versus trying to take stem cells from a different dog and putting them in this dog," said Dr. Williams. "By harvesting the stem cells from the fat versus people have heard of stem cells from umbilical cords and stuff like that we're taking it from the fat tissue and harvesting those and actually activating with a fluorescent light."

Once the fat is extracted it's a two hour process to prepare the new stem cells. Those are then injected back into the patient along with platelets that work with the immune system to fight the disorder.

Physician First Choice Now Offering IV Stem Cell Therapy for Numerous Medical Conditions with US Board Certified Stem …

Orange County, CA (PRWEB) October 21, 2013

The premier stem cell therapy clinic on the West Coast, Physician First Choice, is now offering IV stem cell treatment for numerous medical conditions. This includes stem cell treatment for Alzheimer's disease, Diabetes, Parkinson's, Liver Disease, Cardiac Disease, COPD and much more. The treatments are provided by US Board Certified Stem Cell Doctors and for more information call (888) 988-0515.

Stem cell therapy has become available for numerous medical conditions and can dramatically improve the patient's baseline. Increasing amounts of research are showing the benefits of IV stem cell therapy for conditions such as diabetes and COPD. Prior to stem cell therapy, these conditions could be managed with traditional medications, but the disease itself could not be altered. With stem cell therapy, that possibility exists.

The Board Certified stem cell doctors at Physician First Choice have over 20 combined years of experience working with patients for both stem cell injection treatment and IV therapy. The clinic treats patients at multiple Southern California locations along with an international location in Mexico. Patient treatment is performed by the same US Board Certified doctors before, during and after therapy to ensure continuity of care.

The program in Mexico involves four days worth of treatment at a first rate clinic, and patients stay at a beautiful hotel with transportation included. IV stem cell therapy is performed along with growth factor treatments to enhance the effect of the bone marrow stem cells.

For conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's or Parkinson's, watching a loved one deteriorate can be disheartening even when the best care is received. Physician First Choice has been having excellent results with IV stem cell treatment for diabetes and these conditions, and the program has been growing exponentially as a result.

The 4 Day Stem Cell Therapy IV Program is offered as a package. Transportation to and from San Diego is included along with the Hotel Stay, All Medical Treatment, Breakfast Each Day, and Transportation between the Gorgeous Hotel and the Stem Cell Treatment Facility. Patients must be approved for program inclusion with a full medical record review and evaluation by the Southern California doctors.

To inquire about program inclusion for IV stem cell therapy, call Physician First Choice at (888) 988-0515.

Gene and Stem Cell Therapy Combination Could Aid Wound Healing

Johns Hopkins Medicine Media Relations and Public Affairs

JOHNS HOPKINS MEDICINE NEWS TIPS FROM THE 2013 ANNUAL CLINICAL CONFERENCE OF THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF SURGEONS, OCT. 6-10, WASHINGTON, D.C.

GENE AND STEM CELL THERAPY COMBINATION COULD AID WOUND HEALING

--Findings in elderly mice offer insight into helping elderly people recover from burns

Newswise Johns Hopkins researchers, working with elderly mice, have determined that combining gene therapy with an extra boost of the same stem cells the body already uses to repair itself leads to faster healing of burns and greater blood flow to the site of the wound.

Their findings offer insight into why older people with burns fail to heal as well as younger patients, and how to potentially harness the power of the bodys own bone marrow stem cells to reverse this age-related discrepancy.

As we get older, it is harder for our wounds to heal, says John W. Harmon, M.D., a professor of surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, who will present his findings to the American College of Surgeons Surgical Biology Club on Sunday at 9 a.m. Our research suggests there may be a way to remedy that.

To heal burns or other wounds, stem cells from the bone marrow rush into action, homing to the wound where they can become blood vessels, skin and other reparative tissue. The migration and homing of the stem cells is organized by a protein called Hypoxia-Inducible Factor-1 (HIF-1). In older people, Harmon says, fewer of these stem cells are released from the bone marrow and there is a deficiency of HIF-1. The protein was first discovered about 15 years ago at Johns Hopkins by Gregg L. Semenza, M.D., Ph.D., one of Harmons collaborators.

Harmon and his colleagues first attempted to boost the healing process in mice with burn wounds by increasing levels of HIF-1 using gene therapy, a process that included injecting the rodents with a better working copy of the gene that codes for the protein. That had worked to improve healing of wounds in diabetic animals, but the burn wound is particularly difficult to heal, and that approach was insufficient. So they supplemented the gene therapy by removing bone marrow from a young mouse and growing out the needed stem cells in the lab. When they had enough, they injected those supercharged cells back into the mice.

After 17 days, there were significantly more mice with completely healed burns in the group treated with the combination therapy than in the other groups, Harmon says. The animals that got the combination therapy also showed better blood flow and more blood vessels supplying the wounds.

Okyanos Heart Institute Offers Educational Seminar About Cardiac Stem Cell Therapy In Lucaya, Grand Bahama

Freeport, The Bahamas (PRWEB) October 03, 2013

Okyanos Heart Institute, whose mission is to bring a new standard of care and better quality of life to patients with coronary artery disease using cardiac stem cell therapy, has announced that they will be hosting a free educational seminar for the business community and all other interested individuals on Tuesday, October 22nd from 5:30 6:30 pm in the Coral Reef Room of the Pelican Bay Hotel in Lucaya, Grand Bahama Island. Registration is requested to attend as seating is limited.

Howard Walpole, M.D., M.B.A., F.A.C.C., F.S.C.A.I. and chief medical officer and interventional cardiologist for Okyanos Heart Institute will provide an overview of stem cell therapy for heart disease, the source of stem cells, how it is intended to work, and the protocol that will be used by the cath lab for patients once the facility is open in February, 2014. Erika Mangrum, SVP of Communications for the company, will provide an overview of what services will be needed by small businesses on the island, such as janitorial, hospital grade laundry, transportation, catering and more. A preliminary list of jobs that Okyanos Heart Institute will need to fill towards the end of the year will also be shared.

We welcome the local business community to learn about what we will be doing in treating patients with heart disease, said Walpole. Stem cell therapy is a growing field still with some confusion around where stem cells come from, what they do, and how they can potentially help someone with heart disease. We want to answer as many questions as we can.

President of The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited (GBPA) Ian Rolle, is pleased with how plans are progressing as the Institute prepares to open its doors locally in early 2014. Legislation has recently been enacted to support stem cell therapy, research and development in The Bahamas. This is of monumental proportions as Grand Bahama Island is now poised to become a leading centre for medical advancement, Rolle said. We heartily welcome the Okyanos Heart Institute and support their efforts towards public education. Additionally, the employment of skilled professionals and outsourcing of ancillary services, mean permanent engagement and greater business opportunities for many of our citizenry.

Okyanos Heart Institute will have a number of service needs from the local business community, said Mangrum. We hope to meet potential suppliers and servicers and share what our needs will be from service providers, and share employment needs once we are close to opening in February. We could not be more enthused about bringing patients to the beautiful island of Grand Bahama in the hopes of improving the quality of their lives by restoring flow to their hearts.

Registration for the seminar is requested as seating is limited. Call 242-688-2667 or email freeseminar(at)okyanos(dot)com by Oct 18.

ABOUT OKYANOS HEART INSTITUTE: (Oh key AH nos) Based in Freeport, The Bahamas, Okyanos Heart Institutes mission is to bring a new standard of care and a better quality of life to patients with coronary artery disease using cardiac stem cell therapy. Okyanos adheres to U.S. surgical center standards and is led by Chief Medical Officer Howard T. Walpole Jr., M.D., M.B.A., F.A.C.C., F.S.C.A.I. Okyanos Treatment utilizes a unique blend of stem and regenerative cells derived from ones own adipose (fat) tissue. The cells, when placed into the heart via a minimally-invasive catheterization, stimulate the growth of new blood vessels, a process known as angiogenesis. The treatment facilitates blood flow in the heart and supports intake and use of oxygen (as demonstrated in rigorous clinical trials such as the PRECISE trial). The literary name Okyanos (Oceanos) symbolizes flow. For more information, go to http://www.okyanos.com.

Stem cell therapy for burns, not aging, says FDA

MANILA, PhilippinesStem cell therapy should only apply to skin grafting for burn patients and not for anti-aging purposes, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Up to now, there is no evidence that stem cell therapy has anti-aging effects, said FDA acting Director General Kenneth Hartigan-Go.

The FDA recognizes only hematopoietic (pertaining to the formation and development of blood cells) stem cell transplantation, corneal resurfacing with limbal stem cells and skin regeneration with epidermal stem cells as generally accepted standards of health care.

Asked if this meant anti-aging stem cell therapies would not be allowed in the Philippines, Go said: It means that if the health claim is for burn patients, requirements that need to be submittedlike clinical trial reportsare expected to be complete, whereas if the claim is for anti-aging, then the requirements may be more extensive and intensive considering that products for anti-aging claims are still controversial.

Facility accreditation

The FDA said it had been continuously collaborating with the Department of Healths Bureau of Health Facilities and Services (BHFS) in accrediting facilities that deal with human cells, tissues, and cellular and tissue-based products (HCT/Ps), laboratory and therapeutic activities or services.

As of Sept. 24, 51 facilities have applied for accreditation, and 11 of these have been inspected by the BHFS, the FDA said.

No automatic approval

Submission of an application, however, does not necessarily result in automatic approval.

The FDA guidelines require that all stem cell and cellular-based treatments offered in the country should first pass the agencys standards for safety, efficacy and quality.

Stem Cell Therapy for Parkinson’s Proves Safe in Primates

In a step that brings stem cells closer to the clinic, researchers in Japan have found that transplanting reprogrammed stem cells into the brains of primates elicits little rejection by their immune systems.

Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are created when skin cells, for example, are genetically reprogrammed to an embryonic-like state. This kind of stem cells holds great potential for the treatment of disease, since the cells are genetically identical to the patient they are taken from.

However, studies in rodents have suggested that the immune system may still recognize cells derived from iPSCs as foreign, and mount an attack on them. This has cast doubt on the feasibility of similar cell therapy for humans.

To test this in an animal more closely related to humans, researchers studied macaques. Using cells taken from the monkeys mouths or from their bloodstream, the researchers created iPSCs which they then, in turn, transformed into neurons. These neurons were of a specific kind: dopamine-producing neurons, the type depleted by Parkinsons disease.

Each monkey got six injections of these neurons into its brainsome which had been made from their own cells and others which were from another individual and therefore mismatched. The team could then see what kind of immune response each type produced.

Over subsequent months of observation, the monkeys showed very little immune response to transplants of their own cells. Their immune response was much higher in response to cells from another monkey.

The team also tracked how well the neurons survived after transplantation. They found that even when there was an immune response from the primate, the dopamine-producing neurons survived. The study is published today in Stem Cell Reports.

Trials using iPSCs to treat people with Parkinsons disease could therefore be on the horizon. These findings give a rationale to start autologous transplantationat least of neural cellsin clinical situations, says senior author Jun Takahashi of Kyoto University.

Stem cell therapy improves lives of pets

An unprecedented stem cell procedure that's been used on athletes overseas is now helping to improve the quality of life for mans best friend.

The technique is only available at one animal hospital in Louisiana.

Dale Landry loves his dog, Ratchet, unconditionally. He said he's a friend who's stuck by him through many of life's adventures.

"He comes to my office; he's a very active dog. He's done water sports until about two years ago, rides in the boat, rides the Seado. He actually used to wakeboard with me," Landry said.

Ratchet has been a little less active lately. The almost 15-year-old labrador mix has recently been suffering from joint pain and hip arthritis.

"He's been more and more hunched in the back and crouched down in the hind end, so you could definitely tell he was having a little trouble getting up in the morning," said Dr. Gordy Labbe of the Metairie Small Animal Hospital.

Ratchet has been taking medication and has undergone laser treatments for a year, but Labbe tried a new option Wednesday in the form of stem cell therapy.

It's a breakthrough technique that has yet to be used on small animals. It's a new tool available to veterinarians to combat osteoarthritis and give hope to improving quality of life of canines, felines and equine patients.

Labbe is one of the 450 veterinarians across the nation to implement this American Veterinary Medical Association approved procedure.

The Metairie Small Animal Hospital is the only clinic in the state of Louisiana that offers the in-house technology.
