New treatments available for cancer were discussed by world cancer experts from the USA and Europe in a free public information evening The Promise of Gene Therapy Newest Cancer Treatments on Thursday, September 3rd. The event was hosted by Cork Cancer Research Centre (CCRC) and took place at the Lifetime Lab, Lee Road, Cork, Ireland. Five specialists shared the new treatments they have pioneered for cancer patients.

http://www.bbc.co.uk Bang Goes the Theory's Liz Bonnin recently used mitochondrial DNA to trace her ancestry right back to the earliest humans. It's a subject co-presenter Dr Yan Wong knows plenty about, and a great excuse for him to meet up with his old tutor Prof Richard Dawkins. The pair collaborated on a book, The Ancestor's Tale, and here they chat about one of its main themes: how lineages of different genes can reveal surprisingly different histories.

Genetics Based Research on Treatment-Resistant Epilepsy
A sizable fraction of patients suffering from epilepsy, and most patients with Dravet Syndrome, cannot control their seizures with drugs. Research in animals shows that shutting off a gene called SCN8A can raise the threshold of excitability for neurons, thus lowering susceptibility to seizures
