He is considered one of the greatest experts in the world on gene therapy. After dividing his time between Italy and the United States for over ten years, he returned permanently to Italy in 1998 as the director of the gene therapy laboratory at the Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment in Candiolo (Turin).
