Email: drj@boyntonbeachdentist.com Website: http://www.boyntonbeachdentist.com Malocclusion is the dental term for teeth that don #39;t fit together properly. Literally, malocclusion means "bad bite." Orthodeontis is the branch of dentistry that corrects malocclusions and brings your teeth into proper alignment. Some people are lucky and naturally have straight teeth. Others aren #39;t as lucky. The size of your teeth and how they fit into your jaw are inherited traits, and malocclusion can often affect several generations. Besides genetics, malocclusion can also be caused by: bull;Accidents or disease bull;A missing tooth, allowing the teeth around the open space to shift. bull;Habits, such as thumb sucking, which can put pressure on teeth There are many types of malocclusions. Your upper or lower jaw may be too far in or out. There may not be enough space in your mouth for your teeth to develop properly, leading to crowding. On the other hand, you might have too much space between your teeth, allowing them to shift, or your teeth may be in crossbite, which means that one or more of your upper teeth bite inside your lower teeth. A malocclusion that isn #39;t corrected can really affect your profile and appearance. Poorly aligned teeth can also contribute to tooth decay, bone destruction, loss of teeth, and jaw joint problems. CANCER UPDATE: CAUSES, TREATMENT AND PREVENTION (Accessible Preview)
Surveys the fundamentals of how cancers develop, how they are treated, the role of genetics, and the role of lifestyle choices in cancer prevention. Meet three real people coping with different kinds of cancers and see how their lives are affected. Emphasizes that promising new treatments are being developed, but also that there is still much that needs to be learned. Engaging original animation clearly illustrates the process of how normal cells turn into cancer cells, how tumors develop, and how cancer cells metastasize to other parts of the body. Also presents the importance of early cancer screening and steps that take to reduce the risk of developing cancer. Giant Panda Genome Reveals Human Toll on Species – Video
Giant Panda Genome Reveals Human Toll on Species
The genomic history of the giant panda has been uncovered, revealing evidence of their population history and local adaptation. The research team tracked the panda #39;s history back to its earliest days by carrying out whole genome resequencing of 34 wild giant pandas. They found that for millions of years, global changes in climate were the main driver for panda population fluctuation until recently, when human activities likely caused population divergence and serious decline. The giant panda is now the rarest bear in the world. The hope is that the study, published in Nature Genetics, could address conservation methods not just for giant pandas but other endangered species as well.From:slatesterViews:93 7ratingsTime:00:46More inNews Politics

Jorg gave an excellent speech about Innovation Fund Programs in Europe facing the problem of fragmentation (research per country) and remembered the great upcoming problems in the future. Sustainability, Water, Energy, Billions of People... He pointed out that these issues can not be solved even by the biggest companies: the intrinsic social challenge. There is only ONE chance: To solve it together! Genetics, Bio-Science, Material-Science, and all other disciplines acting on a global coordinated level. Hacking the Human brain and super soldiers
Transhumanism gone wild. Nothing about this is pretty and within the fractured minds of these futurists is a desire to achieve a result that is already inherit within the human, "high spirituality", which one can access now by simply deciding to love unconditionally. Sounds hokey I know. Here #39;s one reporters take on this below: The Human Connectome Project (HCP) is dedicated to "understanding the complete details of neural connectivity." They endeavor to "construct a map of the complete structural and functional neural connections in vivo within and across individuals." By compiling data on genetics, behavior, matter fiber pathways, and functional correlations, the HCP have refined and optimized "the spatial and functional resolution of our connectome neuroimaging" as well as acquiring "high resolution neuroimaging data" to enhance understanding of the "neuroanatomical connectedness of the human brain." Advancing biometrics with neurological augmentations would result in successful connectivity of the human brain to robotic systems in a literal sense. AutoNOMOS Labs have developed an iPad app that allows users to order their car to drive. After a few modifications, the technology can control the car through the brain of the driver. A software program called BrainDriver interprets and records information just as an EEG which can be understood and translated into intentions which are then played out by the vehicle. Targeting Oncogenic Pathways in Head and Neck Cancer – Video
Targeting Oncogenic Pathways in Head and Neck Cancer
Air date: Wednesday, December 12, 2012, 3:00:00 PM Description: Margaret Pittman Lecture Dr. Jennifer R. Grandis was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pa. She earned her BA in art history and biology from Swarthmore College and her medical degree with high honors from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She completed her internship in general surgery and her residency in otolaryngology at the University of Pittsburgh. During her training she began to focus her studies on the biology of head and neck tumor growth. She has dedicated her research career to the study of the critical genetic alterations that characterize these cancers, with the ultimate goal of improving patient treatment and survival. Her laboratory was among the first to validate the epidermal growth factor receptor(EGFR) and Signal Transducers and Activators of Transcription (STATs) as therapeutic targets in head and neck cancer (HNC), thus paving the way for studies in other cancers. EGFR serves as a central integration point for coordination of a broad array of cellular signals. She demonstrated that G-protein-coupled receptors(GPCRs) "transactivate" EGFR contributing to HNC progression. Each of these basic science observations has been translated into clinical trials. She developed an antisense gene therapy approach targeting EGFR and completed a phase 1 study that found a high clinical response rate (35%), which correlated with decreased EGFR expression in the post-treatment biopsies ...From:nihvcastViews:5 0ratingsTime:50:28More inScience Technology

Christchurch neurologist part of MS trial
A Christchurch neurologist is leading part of the worlds first clinical trial into whether oral vitamin D may prevent multiple sclerosis (MS).
The trial is being conducted in both Australia and New Zealand and will include 240 people with early MS.
Dr Deborah Mason will oversee the New Zealanders taking part in the study while Professor Bruce Taylor, a former Christchurch neurologist now based in Hobart, Australia, is one of the principal researchers heading the trial in Australia.
Dr Mason says MS prevalence in New Zealand is high compared to many other parts of the world and appears to be increasing particularly in females.
Researchers believe New Zealanders may be particularly susceptible to MS because of our low latitude which results in low levels of vitamin D.
"This is particularly true for people living in Canterbury, Otago and Southland. We are uniquely placed to perform this research here and it has particular relevance given our high MS rates," Dr Mason says.
"It will be the worlds first randomised controlled interventional study using vitamin D in people with MS to see how it might influence this disease."
MS Research Australia has pledged $3.5 million towards the study.
"This trial may not only find a very modestly priced treatment for early MS it may also give us a lot of information about the effect of vitamin D on MS and may be a precursor to intervention in at risk groups prior to developing disease. It also has synergies with other research being done in NZ in children and others as vitamin D is currently a hot topic of research."
Dr Mason says the timing of the study has also worked in perfectly as it correlates with other research she has been doing including the NZ MS Incidence Study for the MS Society.

How To Be Vegan: Answering Questions
How To Be Vegan: Answering Questions * Why? Animal compassion / rights, health, environment etc. * What do you eat? Vegan versions of "regular" food, ethnic food, fruit / vegetables / grain / nuts / seeds etc. * Where do you get your protein from? Plant based food contains all the amino acids to make protein. * Where do you get your calcium from? Green leafy vegetables are a great source of calcium. * Isn #39;t it expensive? Some of the meat substitutes / specialty items can be a little pricy, but fruit / vegetables / grain / nuts / seeds etc are pretty cheap. * Do you eat fish? I #39;m not sure why this questions comes up, but no. * Do you eat honey? No, I don #39;t. Vegans who eat honey are called "beegans". Agave nectar is a good honey substitute. * How long have you been vegan? This is a personal answer. I just tell them how long I #39;ve been vegan. * Were you raised vegan? No, my family thinks I #39;m crazy. * Are you going to raise your kids vegan? This is a personal answer and depends on the parents. Many people say they won #39;t feed their kids animal products, but it #39;s their choice (like when they #39;re at a friend #39;s or when they get older). * What if you were stranded on an island and had to eat meat to survive? I doubt I #39;ll ever be in that situation. Most people would do what it takes to survive. * Wouldn #39;t cows take over the world if everyone went vegan overnight? I doubt everyone will go vegan overnight. Veganism is a movement that reduces factory farming through supply and demand ...From:thatoneguyonlineViews:24 1ratingsTime:09:03More inHowto Style

Obesity Levels in America Climb To Record Heights Obesity is a condition that is the result of excessive body fat accumulation. It is most often caused by overeating combined with little or no physical activity. It can also be the result of genetics, medications or other disorders.
