Student startup connecting the female founders of today and tomorrow – The Gazette Western University’s Newspaper

Co-founders Ravina Anand (left) and Michelle Kwok (right), Mar. 5, 2020.

Men dont know how hard it is to be the only woman at a board meeting. After all, according to FLIKs website, less than one in five businesses globally are led by women.

Thats why current third-year medical science student at Western University, Michelle Kwok, co-founded the Female Laboratory of Innovative Knowledge, a network that connects female students with women in leadership.

The portal launched in January and is still in its beta phase. But as a cost-free service, FLIK has brought together over 100 apprenticeships in a wide range of industries like consulting, technology, marketing, fashion and product design. And, its closing in on 1,000 users.

They currently have students completing apprenticeships at companies like The Gist, Greenpeace and The Fashion Innovation Centre.

High profile women in leadership, like Kim Kaupe co-founder and CEO of The Superfan Company, who regularly works with Justin Bieber, A$AP Rocky and John Mayer are also on the platform.

Our main goal is to create meaningful relationships between the female founders of today and the female founders of tomorrow and together increase female ventures on a global scale, Kwok says.

For students looking for opportunities in their careers, this platform offers them a connection to founders who are seeking new, young hires with fresh and innovative eyes.

Its a win-win proposition, she says.

Starting off as a media company that wanted to showcase female founders career stories, Kwok and her co-founder, Ravina Anand, realized they could do even more. So, they began connecting female founders with people in their student networks.

Fourth-year genetics student Sarah Whittaker is doing a three-month apprenticeship with Louise Macnab, the co-founder and business manager at Moxie a digestive health start-up based in New York.

The beauty of FLIKs apprenticeship model is that its more of a partnership than a job, says Whittaker.

Alongside their mentor, students can create their own projects based on something that would be meaningful for them.

Applicants fill out a profile online, indicating the skills they want to learn and their desired industry, which helps students connect to the best-suited mentor. Mentors can also be requested on a case-by-case basis.

First-year BMOS student Maggie Chen joined FLIK because she wanted to connect with a female CEO or founder on a personal level instead, she found two.

Through FLIK, Chen said shes seen the impact a female-led organization can have on a community.

As a young woman trying to navigate your way into the entrepreneurial or innovative world, you face so many barriers and challenges, says Kwok.

Chen has seen the struggles of being a woman in business. She thinks a lot of young, female students are insecure about their capabilities when they compare themselves to their male counterparts.

FLIK has shown Chen how a small group of women can do so much change by bringing together a community of female leaders across Canada.

Kwok says having female mentors herself helped her with her self-confidence in building her platform.

Business doesnt just have to be for men, she says. If we dont try or leap off the bridge like all these other guys then were never going to equal the playing field.

The young founder believes women need to support each other now because its a critical time when women are going to completely shift gears, become entrepreneurs and change the economy.

Its going to be easier if we have people who look like us alongside us and supporting us, she says.

This Louisiana bill would keep trans students from playing on teams matching their gender identity – NOLA.com

Though the Louisiana legislative session doesnt begin until Monday, a bill that would mandate transgender student athletes participate in team sports corresponding to their sex assigned at birth, rather than their gender identity, is already garnering attention.

The bill by Rep. Beryl Amedee, a Houma Republican, would apply to sports teams at Louisiana public schools and private schools that receive public funds such as through voucher programs from the elementary school level through the collegiate level. A similar bill has also been pre-filed by Sen. Beth Mizell, a Franklinton Republican.

Amedee said the bill would not ban transgender athletes from sports but rather level the playing field for athletes assigned female at birth because transgender females are generally, stereotypically speaking, at an advantage over biological females. She said that on average men have greater average lung volume, larger bones and muscles than women.

An athlete who truly wants to compete because of the love of the sport is going to want to compete where the competition is fair, she said, and the competition is fair when it's based appropriately on your makeup. If you are biologically male, but you compete against the females, how can you ever be assured that your win is truly a win?

Opponents of the law say there are many different body types within sexes and argue that a law shouldnt be made based on generalizations.

Certainly, that does not apply across the board, and that I think is what makes this such an unfair and ridiculous piece of legislation, said Brandon Robb, a lawyer at a New Orleans law firm that works with many LGBT clients. You could take individuals, even people who were female from birth and still are biologically female Some women are going to be taller, stronger than other women.

It would exclude people based on a broad generalization, he continued. Gender discrimination based on that sort of broad generalization, I think is going to be really suspect to a court of law that might be reviewing it (in the future).

White evangelical Protestants stand noticeably apart from other religious people in a new poll.

While Amedee said she has not heard of specific situations in Louisiana where transgender female athletes were systematically outperforming those assigned female at birth, she said it was important to get ahead of the issue.

I think if we don't take care of this, if this becomes an issue in Louisiana where we have a lot of athletic competitions where we have biological females competing against transgender females and the competition becomes unfair, as it has in other places in this country, then what we're going to see is the demise of women's sports, she said. We'll see women just not bothering, and to me, that's a step backwards.

More than a dozen other states, including Ohio, Idaho and Missouri, have filed similar bills in recent months regarding transgender students participation in sports, legislation often dubbed the Save Womens Sports Act by supporters.

Many legislators who have brought these bills forward refer to a Connecticut case, in which three high school girls are suing over the participation of two transgender athletes in track and field events, saying they have an unfair competitive advantage. The plaintiffs in that case are being represented by the Alliance Defending Freedom, a conservative nonprofit.

But Dylan Waguespack of Louisiana Trans Advocates said the recent crop of bills appearing in state legislatures are evidence that the bills are being pushed by national organizations opposed to LGBT rights.

This legislation is not homegrown, he said. These bills are identical to bills filed in Arizona, and they're very, very similar to bills filed in 15 other states. It kind of actually exposes these bills for what they are, which is imported discriminatory legislation from some fringe national extremist groups.

Early childhood education, affordable housing, infrastructure, the minimum wage, justice reform and equal pay are issues to watch.

Currently, Louisiana policies for transgender peoples participation in sports varies by age. According to Waguespack, schools are left to decide policies for elementary school children. At the high school level, the Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) guidelines state that a student-athlete shall compete in the gender of their birth certificate unless they have undergone sex reassignment.

The high school student must then go before a committee who is instructed to allow them to compete on a team matching their gender identity if they have had sex reassignment surgery before puberty. If they have had sex reassignment surgery after puberty, the committee would have to verify whether the person had completed surgical anatomical changes, updated all official government documents and undergone hormone therapy.

Even then, LHSAA states, athletic eligibility in the reassigned gender can begin no sooner than two years after all surgical and anatomical changes have been completed.

Waguespack said these standards are so hard to meet that they amount to a de facto ban on transgender high school students playing on school sports teams that correspond with their gender identity.

I think even folks who aren't living with these issues day to day like I am would know those are not things that are happening to high school students, he said. We wouldn't even recommend that high school students have permanent surgical care. That's something that you do as an adult.

There are no health care providers that would ever provide that kind of care for a minor," he added.

And while, the LHSAA policies are listed as guidelines on their website, Waguespack said the organization does enforce them. A Louisiana high school that allows a transgender person to compete according to their gender identity could potentially have their record disputed and get disqualified for fielding an ineligible player.

LHSAA has made the determination in recent history, like within this past year, that a student who's transgender who meets like all of the things we would expect a high school student to meet is not eligible, he said.

At the college level, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) allows transgender women to compete on womens teams if they have completed a year of testosterone suppression treatment, regardless of what their testosterone levels are and if they. Transgender men can compete without medically transitioning.

Gilead Sciences is awarding $163,000 to three New Orleans organizations fighting HIV in 2020.

GLSEN (formerly the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network) lists Louisiana as one of 17 states whose state athletic association has a policy that discriminates against transgender athletes.

Transathlete.com, which monitors policies for across the country, also classified Louisianas K-12 policies as discriminatory but did list Louisiana State University as one of 15 colleges with trans-inclusive intramural athletic policies.

The bills by Amedee and Mizell would restrict transgender athletes participation even further by implementing a policy that mandates student athletes at all levels play on teams that correspond with their sex assigned at birth with no exceptions.

The bill states that if a dispute arises as to the biological sex of a student who participates or desires to participate on a female, girls', or women's school athletic team, a physicians signed statement would determine the students sex assigned at birth.

That determination would be based on the student's internal and external reproductive anatomy, the student's normal endogenously produced levels of testosterone and an analysis of the student's genetic makeup.

It is unclear how such an examination would work in practice. Amedee said physicians who deal with genetics would need to determine a students genetic makeup as outlined in the bill. But she was unsure if a regular primary care physician would be able to provide this service.

We'd have to ask a doctor these things, she said.

Waguespack said not only did he think the examinations and tests outlined in the law would be a massive overreach into the privacy of young people, but that he also was concerned about who would be able to question someones gender and therefore require them to get a physicians statement.

It also sets up this really scary Orwellian system for disputing someone's gender, Waguespack said. It doesn't specify who can dispute someone's gender. It leaves it pretty open to suggest that anyone could.

Eighteen Louisiana equality organizations, including the ACLU of Louisiana, Women With a Vision and Lift Louisiana, recently signed a letter against both bills, calling them a misguided effort to offer the state as a means of enforcing gender norms.

Robb said he is working with the Louisiana LGBT rights organization Forum for Equality to ensure the bill does not pass. Should the bill become law, though, he sees a court challenge as probably inevitable."

These are the sort of laws that in other states where they've passed these things or other forms of discrimination, they've been challenged in court and often successfully."

Dog breeders urged to act over high levels of anxiety in pets – The Guardian

Dog breeders need to take action to improve canine mental health, scientists have said, after research found almost three-quarters of pet dogs have highly problematic anxiety-related behaviour.

While physical problems such as breathing difficulties and other health concerns relating to squashed-nosed breeds have become a hot topic, the study suggests breeders also need to focus on dogs behaviour.

Behavioural problems are the leading cause for the relinquishment or euthanasia of the dogs, said Prof Hannes Lohi, a co-author of the study from the University of Helsinki.

The study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, is based on a survey of owners of more than 13,700 pet dogs in Finland, spanning 264 breeds and ranging from young pups to elderly hounds.

It examined the frequency of seven anxiety-related traits, including noise sensitivity, fear, aggression, separation problems and compulsive behaviour, as well as sub-traits within these categories, such as tail-chasing. For each, dogs were classified as having low, medium or high levels of problems.

It found that 72.5% of dogs had highly problematic behaviour in at least one of the seven categories, and many had multiple problems. Almost a third of dogs showed high sensitivity to noise, with fireworks a particular problem, while 29% of dogs were said to be highly fearful and 14% showed highly problematic aggression.

We observed some differences such as male dogs being more often aggressive and impulsive, while female dogs were more fearful, said Lohi.

There were also differences by age: for example, high noise sensitivity was more common among older dogs, while destructive behaviour when alone classed as a type of separation issue was more common in young dogs.

The team also looked at particular breeds, finding that while dogs of any breed could have any of the anxiety problems, particular traits were more common in certain types of dog.

As a result, selective breeding focusing on behaviour may reduce the prevalence of canine anxieties, the authors said.

Miniature schnauzers, for example, had high levels of aggression both towards strangers and family members, and a fear of strangers, while nearly 10% of Staffordshire bull terriers chased their tail.

Perhaps surprisingly, the team found that mixed breeds were more likely to show many of the various traits than purebred dogs although the researchers say that may be because many of the former were probably rescue animals that potentially had had a difficult start in life and a lack of socialisation.

The study has limitations: it is not clear if the trends would hold in other countries, and the team only looked at the frequency of behaviours and not their severity. It may also be that owners of dogs with behaviour problems may have been more likely to complete the questionnaire, although the researchers say their study was advertised to all owners and the findings chime with other research.

Dr Rowena Packer, an expert in animal behaviour and welfare from the Royal Veterinary College, said a dogs genetics and their environment each contributed to the way they act.

The way that both breeders and owners interact with dogs is hugely important in raising mentally healthy dogs, she said. This includes appropriate socialisation to people and other animals and habituation to day-to-day experiences as puppies, and positive, force-free training throughout life.

Packer noted that when it comes to heritable traits, too often the emphasis is on looks over behaviour. She said that because genetics and early environment set up dogs for the rest of their lives, breeders must do more to produce behaviourally healthy dogs.

Some of the behavioural problems highlighted in this study can lead to a lifetime of misery for affected dogs and an emotional and financial burden on their owners, she said. Tackling these problems through selection of behaviourally sound breeding stock, along with educating owners on appropriate interactions, environment and training for dogs, should be a high priority for all dog lovers.

Change is good, but it’s better together – FreshPlaza.com

The Southern Exposure 2020 trade show was held in Tampa this past weekend. The day before the trade show several educational sessions were held. The first of these sessions was entitled The Plight of Plastics, and consisted of a panel of five people: Janis McIntosh of Naturipe Farms, Natalie Shuman of Apeel Science, Brad Dennis of CKF Inc., Kathy Lawrence of Proseal and Elizabeth Yerecic of Yerecic Label. The panel was led by Anabella de Freeman of Walmart Stores.

De Freeman opened the session by explaining the initiatives taken by Walmart for reducing the use of plastics. She said: Walmart has made the commitment to have 100% recyclable packaging for all our private label products by 2025. Our call to action consists of three parts: use less plastics, make it recyclable, and label it.

After de Freemans introduction, each of the panelists received some time to explain how their company views the plight of plastics and what they are doing to help improve the situation.

Commitment to reduction of plasticJanis McIntosh of Naturipe Farms started by saying: I like to call the situation not the plight of plastics, but rather the opportunity of plastics. Recently, the CPMA released their Plastics Technical Report which showed that plastics is needed in berry packaging. So we need to take this opportunity to innovate our plastic use. The issue doesnt require us to eliminate all plastic, but it does require us to eliminate all plastic waste and make it recyclable. We at Naturipe commit to reducing plastic and increasing recyclability.

She added: Change is good, but its better together. To have the most impact, everyone needs to work together and competitors need to ally themselves with each other. This was an important message reiterated by each of the panelists. An example of this cooperation is the commitment of North American berry growers to use 100% recycle-ready packaging by 2025.

Shelf-life and product protectionPanels like this help us realize how we can evolve and innovate as an industry. At Apeel Science we work together with nature to reduce waste and ensure an abundant future for our planet, said Natalie Shuman of Apeel Sciences.

Plastic packaging is often used to elongate a products shelf life. Apeel Sciences works to extend products shelf-lives through a natural, plant-derived product which helps fight food waste and plastic use. While food waste is a sustainability and environmental issue, it is also an economic issue. Shuman explained that US food businesses lose millions of dollars on food waste.

She says: Plastic packaging has multiple purposes: grouping, protection, marketing and shelf-life extension. At Apeel, we tackle this last purpose to help reduce the need for plastic packaging. Our technology uses the molecular building blocks of plants to help create the optimal microclimate within foods. This helps extend the products shelf-life and gives the industry more time at each step of the supply chain.

Alternative packaging optionsBrad Dennis represented CKF Inc., a Canadian packaging company that offers alternatives to plastic packaging. We work with packaging made out of molded pulp. One of our product lines, EarthCycle, uses an optimal blend of virgin hardwood and recycled corrugate. Each of our products are made in North America, and all the materials are sourced from North America as well.

Besides being made of recycled, non-plastic materials, the company goes a step further: the packaging is certified home-compostable. Other benefits of this type of packaging is an up to 20% shelf-life extension, a reduction of over 90% in single use plastics, as well as a 5% sales increase for retailers, Dennis concluded.

Panelist Kathy Lawrence represented ProSeal, a company originating in the UK, whose range of top seal machinery includes 20 different machines specializing in sealing processes. She said: One of the ways we can reduce plastic is by replacing a clamshell lid by a top seal. Not only does this reduce the amount of plastic in the packaging, it also helps reduce warehouse space. We also work with shelf-life extension solutions. Specific top seal materials help control respiration rates and this can help fight food waste.

LabelingElizabeth Yerecic of Yerecic Label helped explain to the audience the issues they may run into with their product labels. While labels themselves do not contribute to the high source of single-serve plastics, they do contribute to the lack of recyclability of single-serve plastics. In order for labels to be sustainable, they need to have aspects such as degradable additives and friendly inks, said Yerecic.

Another issue with labels is the adhesive. The adhesive needs to be able to wash away during the caustic bath at the recycling facility. This is something that is largely the responsibility of the brand owners to ensure that the labels they use in their packaging has all the right components, Yerecic explains. If a label doesnt meet all the necessary requirements, then it is possible that the entire package will not be recycled.

In order to make headway on the plight of plastics, people in each step of the supply chain need to take responsibility. The general conclusion of the panel was that plastic is a necessary material in the industry, for product protection and other purposes, but the way in which it is used needs some major improvement. While many changes have already been made, the best way to move forward is by allying with competitors. While they might be your competitors within the industry, the goal of creating a better and more sustainable future is a shared goal that can only be reached through combined efforts.

Misinformation That May Be Costing Women Their Lives – Jewish Link of New Jersey

By Warren Slaten, M.D. | March 05, 2020

Menopause is not a disease. It is a normal phase of life that marks the end of the menstrual cycle. However, during early adulthood, women are protected by several hormones including estrogen and progesterone. These hormones help women maintain good heart health and help women maintain their bones. They also help women think clearly. When these hormones are lost at menopause, women become more vulnerable to heart diseases, osteoporosis with hip fractures and Alzheimers disease. These happen to be the three leading causes of death in older women.

Since the famous Womens Health Initiative (WHI) study, which was initially published in 2002, the use of hormones declined dramatically. Thats because the study authors and the media exaggerated the studys negative findings and underemphasized the studys many positive findings. As a result, a mass panic developed about hormone replacement such that most physicians stopped prescribing it and most women wanted nothing to do with it.

Unfortunately, when they stop using hormones, which is the most effective way to prevent the three greatest causes of womens death, women are more vulnerable to these three diseases. There have been several medical journals in the last two years that have published articles highlighting the decreased life expectancy for women as a result of not protecting themselves with hormone replacement.

The most common response I hear when I speak to women about hormone replacement is that they are afraid of breast cancer. However, this is pure myth. Estrogen does not cause breast cancer. In fact, the compendium of studies reveal that estradiol actually mildly reduces the incidence of breast cancer. The one hormone that was associated with breast cancer was Provera, which is a synthetic version of progesterone. The natural or bioidentical version actually protects against cancer as progesterone is anti-proliferative. This means that progesterone reduces the progression of cancers. The ironic thing is that as the subjects continued to be followed over the ensuing five years, even Proveras cancer association weakened, but this did not make for good headlines so even most doctors are not aware of this result. The bottom line is that estrogen does not cause cancer and, if anything, provides some protection against breast cancer. Bioidentical progesterone further protects against cancer.

The other error that many doctors make is the misconception that hormone replacement causes strokes and heart attacks. This is because in the WHI study, some of the older women started on hormone replacement had an increased risk for cardiac events during the first year they took hormones. As noted above, estrogen protects against heart disease and younger women had cardiac benefit in the WHI study. The presumed basis for these events is that estrogen causes clots to be dislodged. The older women in the study were more likely to have clots and once the clot is dislodged, strokes and heart attacks can result. Interestingly, these events tend to occur in the first year. After that, even older women received cardiac benefit from estrogen.

Another source of the cardiac error is that in the WHI study, Premarin was used. Premarin is a truncated word for pregnant mares urine. Animal rights issues aside, the biggest concern about Premarin is that it is a stronger estrogen than estradiol, which is the bioidentical version of what humans naturally produce. As a stronger estrogen, Premarin has a tendency to dislodge clots but no study has ever shown that estradiol has such a tendency. Thus, bioidentical estradiol is not associated with heart attacks or strokes. To the contrary, the relative risk of heart disease for women who take estradiol is 0.4 compared to women who do not take estradiol. That means that if a woman does not take estradiol, she is 2.5 times more likely to get heart disease.

The most costly error is that medical societies and organizations have generally recommended hormone replacement for women only when they are having menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and to take them for the shortest possible time at the lowest dose that reduces symptoms. However, we have learned that women who have hot flashes are at higher risk of the diseases associated with menopause, including heart disease, osteoporosis and Alzheimers. One study found that women with hot flashes had increased white matter loss on brain MRIs. Even insulin resistance, which is associated with diabetes mellitus, is increased in women with hot flashes. By taking hormone replacement, women significantly reduce the risk of these diseases. The misconception that women should minimize hormone use has deprived them of a key tool to reduce the risk of such deadly diseases.

Women have been led to believe that hormone replacement is very dangerous. Many women do not even consider hormone replacement because of this; I often see a visceral reaction against hormones that is based on misleading information. I am optimistic to see the medical community starting to realize the harm caused by discouraging hormone use.

Menopause is a challenging time for many women. It is often accompanied by weight gain of 10-20 pounds, increased fatigue, insomnia, depression, decreased libido and even increased joint and muscle pain. I hope that women are encouraged that with bioidentical hormones, women can reverse all these symptoms with weight loss, improved energy, improved mood, improved sleep and improved libido. At the same time, women can reduce the risk of the three leading causes of death for older women, including heart disease, osteoporosis with deadly hip fractures and Alzheimers disease. So by starting bioidentical hormone replacement, you reduce your risk of disease and improve your quality of life.

Mystery of lifespan gap between sexes may be solved, say researchers – The Guardian

From humans to black-tailed prairie dogs, female mammals often outlive males but for birds, the reverse is true.

Now researchers say they have cracked the mystery, revealing that having two copies of the same sex chromosome is associated with having a longer lifespan, suggesting the second copy offers a protective effect.

These findings are a crucial step in uncovering the underlying mechanisms affecting longevity, which could point to pathways for extending life, the authors write. We can only hope that more answers are found in our lifetime.

The idea that a second copy of the same sex chromosome is protective has been around for a while, supported by the observation that in mammals where females have two of the same sex chromosomes males tend to have shorter lifespans. In birds, males live longer on average and have two Z chromosomes, while females have one Z and one W chromosome.

Scientists say they have found the trend is widespread. Writing in the journal Biology Letters, the team report that they gathered data on sex chromosomes and lifespan across 229 animal species, from insects to fish and mammals. Hermaphroditic species and those whose sex is influenced by environmental conditions such as green turtles were not included.

The results reveal that individuals with two of the same sex chromosomes live 17.6% longer, on average, than those with either two different sex chromosomes or just one sex chromosome.

The team say the findings back a theory known as the unguarded X hypothesis. In human cells, sex chromosome combinations are generally either XY (male) or XX (female). In females only one X chromosome is activated at random in each cell.

As a result, a harmful mutation in one of the females X chromosomes will not affect all cells, and hence its impact can be masked. By contrast, as males only have one X chromosome, any harmful mutations it contains are far more likely to be exposed.

The team found that in species where males have two of the same sex chromosomes, these males live on average 7.1% longer than females. However, in species where the sex chromosome pattern is the other way around, such as humans, females live 20.9% longer on average than males.

The researchers say the extent of the longevity gap may reflect other factors at play, including that males tend to take more risks when it comes to securing a sexual partner, including fighting. These pressures to travel far to find a mate, establish a territory and compete with other members of your sex are not seen often in females, said Zoe Xirocostas, a co-author of the research from the University of New South Wales.

But there are also other possibilities as to why the longevity gaps differ in size, including that oestrogen appears to protect the ends of chromosomes from being damaged a process linked to ageing.

Our study suggests that the unguarded X is an underlying genetic factor that can influence lifespan, but many external factors can influence longevity in different ways such as predation, risky behaviours, establishing territories and access to quality nutrition, said Xirocostas.

Prof Steven Austad, an expert on ageing at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, who was not involved in the study, said the theory that having two of the same sex chromosomes is beneficial for longevity was appealing.

I would think that it plays some role in understanding sex differences in longevity but it certainly isnt the only factor, he said, noting that both risk-taking behaviour and parental roles also appeared to be important. For instance, owl monkey males live longer than females and the males play a big role in infant care in that species, he said, noting such males have two different sex chromosomes.

Austad said the upshot was that longevity is not only about sex chromosomes. There is a general trend, but with numerous exceptions, he said.

Everything you need to know about losing your hair as you get older – goodhousekeeping.com

Have you noticed there's more hair on your brush after brushing it, that your parting looks wider, or that your ponytail feels feels less substantial than it used to? Once you notice hair thinning, its hard not to think about it every time you look in a mirror.

Some hair loss is normal we shed approximately 100 hairs a day but what to do when it's a significant amount? Hair thinning and loss in women can have many causes, and are often a combination of factors. It's especially common as we hit mid-life. Here we explore some of the most common causes and share expert tips on what to do when you start to lose your hair.

Dozens of medical issues from autoimmune conditions and hormonal imbalances to scalp infections and genetics can cause hair loss and thinning . A doctor or trichologist can carry out a full medical history, blood tests and a scalp biopsy to help you work out whats causing it.

Androgenetic alopecia or female pattern hair loss is by far the most common a quarter of women have it and youll notice it as thinning especially at the crown and the temples. It happens when a sensitivity to male hormones (androgens) causes follicles to shrink over time. "The hair becomes thinner until eventually the follicle closes over altogether," explained Dr Martin Wade a dermatologist at The London Skin and Hair Clinic.

If it starts in your teens, its considered to be genetic. If it starts in midlife, from 35 to 55, it can be a combination of factors including hormonal changes and lifestyle, which a doctor can help you to unpick.

Post-menopausally, its also called senescent alopecia, which basically means were getting older and everything slows down.

But all is not lost... "In genetic cases, some of the smaller follicles can recover with anti-androgenetic drugs such as finasteride or spironolactone," says Dr Wade. For mid-lifers, topical minoxidil such as Regaine For Women, can help the hair grow thicker and faster.

When the hair falls out in patches, its often down to alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition that affects 2% of women. "Its still largely a mystery as to why it strikes, although stress is a known trigger," said Dr Wade. "We can treat it with steroids and in most cases, the hair grows back."

We might think our hair is essential, but in evolutionary terms its the first thing that the body deprioritises when were in crisis. Crash diets, illness, divorce or the loss of a loved one can lead to diffuse (ie all-over) hair shedding called telogen effluvium. Dr Wade explained: "Stress shocks the hair prematurely out of the growth phase and into the resting phase." You might notice less hair overall or wonder why your hair just wont grow as long as it did. "If the stress is acute, typically the shedding lasts for three months and then turns itself off," Dr Wade said.

If stress is ongoing, then its another story. "There is absolute association between chronic telogen effluvium and stress," confirmed Dr Justine Hextall of the Tarrant Street Clinic in Arundel. "Addressing the causes of your stress is imperative. Often when were stressed we also dont eat well, so looking at diet and supplements as well as whether you might be pulling at your hair due to stress can all help."

Even the type of exercise you do can add to your stress load. Consider choosing yoga over HIIT.

As we move towards menopause and oestrogen levels drop, theres less of a buffer against the effect of male hormones on our follicles. As we know from female pattern baldness, a sensitivity to androgens causes the follicles to miniaturise and die over time.

There are products to tackle this topically: Plantur 39 Shampoo and Tonic have a phyto-caffeine complex to fight the effects of testosterone on the hair root, while Tricho 7 Step 2 scalp drops by Philip Kingsley contains zinc sulphate, azelaic acid and vitamin B6 to reduce the conversion of testosterone.

Its important to support the adrenal glands too, says nutritional therapist Eve Kalinik, not only because they are overworked at this often stressful life stage, but because they step in to produce sex hormones as the ovaries retire. "This causes a knock-on effect on hormonal balance, which can manifest as hair loss or thinning," she explained.

Supporting the adrenal glands with anti-inflammatory healthy fats, B vitamins and anti-oxidant vitamins (A,C,E) is vital to make us more stress resilient.

There are some nutrition basics when it comes to hair health says Eve. "Hair is mostly protein, so make sure you get a serving with every meal, using your palm as a measure of the amount you need, which depends on your own body size," she explained. Omega 3 fats, found in oily fish, organic eggs, flax, chia and walnuts, nourish the follicles.

SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARYGetty Images

Vegans should soak pulses, legumes and grains before cooking to gain the maximum protein and iron from them.

Iron too (in red meat, full fat dairy, eggs and lentils) is vital to nourish healthy hair. Runners may need extra iron due to "foot strike haemolysis" where red blood cells are damaged by the impact of running. You may also be low on iron if you have heavy periods.

What you eat is only the first piece of the nutrition/hair puzzle. "You are also what you absorb," Eve explained. "A poorly functioning digestive system can be a sign that were not getting hair nutrition from our food. Light coloured floating stools can suggest that your gut is not absorbing fats, for example." Eve often recommends a stool test for a fuller gut health picture and liquid probiotics such as Symprove to support the gut.

If you have hair thinning or shedding and youre also tired with dry skin and gaining weight, Eve recommends a blood test to check your thyroid.

Switching up your haircare routine can make a big difference to hair health. Most experts agree that heated styling tools are a no-no for fragile hair, so cut down your use or cut them out altogether. Avoid products with silicones, too (look for anything ending in "cone" on the label) recommended hairdresser Paul Windle. "Silicones are sealants," he explained, "They are what gives you that fake 'plastic' shine. You think your hair is healthy, however, the silicone merely masks the problem." They can also weigh down fine hair.

Keeping the scalp clear of build-up can help those ever more delicate menopausal hairs push through. Try Briogeo Scalp Revival, which is silicone-free with detoxing charcoal to clear the scalp from dead skin, pollution and product build-up, or Kerastase Soothing Scrub Apaisant , which is designed for sensitive scalps with an uplifting citrussy scent. Beware of scalp oils however, Dr Wade cautioned that they can have a toxic effect on the follicle.

Veterinarians answer 8 questions about cats that youve always wanted to ask – Business Insider

captionSometimes cats engage in puzzling behavior thats hard to understand.sourceShutterstock

Whether you own a cat or not, there are probably a few things youve always wondered about them.

And so, Insider spoke with veterinarians to get answers to a few common cat questions that you might have.

Contrary to popular belief, cats cannot sniff out people who are allergic to them, Rover veterinarian Gary Richter told Insider.

He explained that if cats are paying extra attention to someone with allergies, its likely because they are responding to that persons body language.

People with allergies tend to ignore or avoid the cat in the room, which reduces the felines fear of an unfamiliar person. Cats are most likely to be drawn to someone who gives them their space and allows them to approach the human first, said Richter.

Some felines seem to lose control when they are around catnip. Fortunately, as Richter told Insider, the plant isnt harmful to or addictive for cats.

Some cats are drawn to catnip because it takes over their olfactory senses. There is no harm in letting your cat enjoy the scent should they be attracted to it catnip can be used for training or playtime, said Richter.

But keep in mind your cat might begin to feel nauseous or become irritated if you give them too much of it.

Veterinarian Megan Teiber said that its possible to train a cat to use a toilet but the drawbacks may outweigh the benefits of being able to flush your cats waste away.

A change in urine production is often the first sign of a serious medical condition, and if the cat is using the toilet as opposed to the litter box, this is more likely to be missed, said Teiber.

Its also worth noting that if a family member accidentally leaves the toilet lid down, closes the bathroom door, or is occupying the bathroom, the cat may have accidents around the house.

Some folklore holds that cats can tell if someone is pregnant and are drawn to people who are expecting but no, cats are not furry pregnancy tests.

Richter explained that cats just have an incredible sense of smell and are great at reading body language.

During pregnancy, women experience profound changes in their hormone levels which can affect their personal scent, so cats can understand that something is changing based on the new smell, said Richter.

Plus, a persons body temperature often rises in the first trimester of pregnancy. So if you notice a cat snuggling up to someone who is pregnant, they might just be enjoying the extra body heat.

Although male cats have a reputation for being more companionable than female cats, Teiber said there arent significant personality differences between the two.

A lot of people seem to think that male cats are generally more affectionate than female cats. I think there is simply a lot of individual variation and that there is no clear difference between male and female cats, said Teiber.

Some cats do fine when eating only dry food. However, wet cat foods are generally higher in protein and are always higher in moisture than dry foods, which more closely matches feline nutritional needs, said Jennifer Coates, veterinarian and advisor at Pet Life Today.

And as Jaimee Alsing, an animal nutritionist with PurringPal, previously told Insider, cats can actually avoid chronic dehydration by having wet food in their diet.

Chronic dehydration too often leads to tooth decay, bladder stones, and urinary tract infections. Many health issues can be prevented simply by adding a daily meal of wet food to your cats diet, said Alsing.

But Coates said if you still insist on feeding your cat only dry food, give it to them in several small, measured meals throughout the day rather than leaving a bowl of it out at all times.

Teiber said that sometimes female cats appear more affectionate to their owners after a spay, but spaying doesnt actually alter a cats personality.

Prior to being spayed, female cats frequently cycle in and out of heat, so their energy is often focused on mating. Once they are spayed, they may be able to relax and focus more attention on their human companions, said Teiber.

According to VCA Animal Hospitals, after they are neutered, male cats may behave less aggressively and spray less, though overall cat personality is still mainly a product of genetics and upbringing.

Carrying around extra fat can put felines in danger of developing chronic health conditions. Fortunately, it can be easy to tell if your cat is overweight.

When looking down on them from above, overweight cats lack a discernible waist. From the side, an overweight cats belly is closer to the ground than [it is to] the chest, said Coates.

Another sign that your cat is too plump is if you cannot feel their last few ribs by lightly running your hands over their sides, Coates added.

Techshots New Projects Will be on the Next SpaceX Mission Launch – 3DPrint.com

2020 is already promising to be a fantastic year for space exploration. The next generation of Artemis explorers can begin applying for the program that will be journeying to the Moon, Mars and beyond; the James Webb Space Telescope is ready to test key deployments made in space, and even the Orion spacecraft that will blast off to the Moon during Artemis missions has successfully passed its final tests. Furthermore, NASA and commercial space companies prepare for the colonization of orbit, rockets are taking payloads to the International Space Station (ISS) very often and 3D bioprinting is becoming an attractive and useful method to carry out experiments. The next one up is SpaceX mission CRS-20. Scheduled to launch at 11:50 PM Eastern Time (EST) on March 6 from Floridas Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, the unpiloted cargo spacecraft is expected to arrive at the orbiting laboratory two days later with three Techshot-managed research campaigns.

The Indiana-based commercial research company is sending equipment and samples supporting plant, heart and cartilage research for NASA, Emory University and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) to the ISS. According to the company, astronauts onboard the station will use Techshots 3D BioFabrication Facility (BFF) mounted inside the ISS U.S. National Laboratory (ISS National Lab) since last summer to manufacture human knee menisci for the 4-Dimensional Bioprinting, Biofabrication, and Biomanufacturing, or 4D Bio3program. Based at USU, 4D Bio3 is a collaboration between the USU and The Geneva Foundation, a non-profit organization that advances military medical research.

Funded by the U.S. Defense Health Program and managed by the Geneva Foundation, 4D Bio3promotes the development and application of advanced bioprinting, biofabrication, and biomanufacturing technologies for research pursuant to U.S. Department of Defense priorities and ultimately for translation to clinical medical defense care and training solutions.

This is our most diverse manifest to date, said Techshot President and CEO, John Vellinger. Throughout March well be conducting three major investigations in space for three customers using three very different Techshot-built research devices. Its going to be a busy month, but were excited to see the results.

Techshot owns BFF and the company built it at a cost of approximately seven million dollars. The starting point was an nScrypt printer, which now is highly modified by Techshot for use inside the ISS. In that relationship, Techshot handles all the space bioprinting, while nScrypt handles all the Earth-based bioprinting.

This first experiment for 4D Bio3 next month will be used as a test of the materials and the processes required to print a meniscus in space. Techshot engineers will upload a design file to BFF from the companys Payload Operations Control Center in Greenville, Indiana, and evaluate its success via real-time video from inside the unit. A second meniscus print will take place in BFF early next year and the item will then be returned to Earth for extensive testing and comparison to the nScrypt Earth-printed items. Last year nScrypt printed the same thing at a U.S. military base in Africa with their own printer.

Vincent B.Ho, Director of 4D Bio3 and professor and chair of radiology at USU said that meniscal injuries are one of the most commonly treated orthopedic injuries, and have a much higher incidence in military service membersreported to be almost 10 times that of the civilian population. We successfully biofabricated 3D human medial and lateral menisci in a pilot study performed in Africa last summer and anticipate learning valuable lessons on the challenges and benefits of biofabrication in microgravity by performing a similar experiment on the space station.

Besides BFF, there are four other Techshot owned and operated research machines inside the ISS today. Only the BFF is a bioprinter. The others are an X-ray machine for mice, two identical units called the Techshot Multi-use Variable-gravity Platform (MVP), and one called the ADvanced Space Experiment Processor (ADSEP), which is where cells printed in the BFF go to become conditioned and cultured into the tissue. The company has agreements with NASA and the ISS National Lab that permit Techshot to operate a commercial business in space. This is part of NASAs objective to make orbit more commercial, providing access to space for nearly anyone.

Another complex Techshot-managed experiment launching onboard SpaceX CRS-20 will test whether a heart-specific stem cell, called a cardiac progenitor, multiplies better in space and if more of them become heart muscle cells known as cardiomyocytes. This is part of Chunhui Xu, an associate professor in the department of pediatrics at the Emory University School of Medicine who studies heart cells, research that aims to improve treatments for congenital heart disorders and better the hearts ability to regenerate after injuries.

Preparing the experiments: under the vent hood, Biomedical Engineer Jordan Fite adds media to bags and fluid loops that will be used in the experiment in space (Image: Techshot)

Techshot explained that human cardiac tissues cant repair themselves once damaged from disease, due to this, repairing a failing heart by cell therapy requires a large number of cardiomyocytes, which can be converted from stem cells cultured in two dimensions in Earth-based laboratories. Without the pull of gravity, it is expected that culturing in three dimensions in space, inside specialized Techshot cell culture experiment modules, will increase the yield of high-quality heart muscle cells. The company expects that learning more about why this happens could lead to new strategies for reproducing the same results on a much larger scale on Earth, lowering costs and enabling more patients to receive needed cardiac cell therapies.

It is expected that once the cargo spacecraft reaches the station, the 12 Techshot experiment modules will be removed from the spacecraft and inserted by the crew into the companys Multi-use Variable-gravity Platform (MVP) unit number two mounted in the Japanese space laboratory known as Kibo.

We are thankful for Techshots engineers who designed the Multi-use Variable-gravity Platform hardware and will help us maintain constant communication with the astronauts during the flight operation. Their professionalism and collaboration with our team have contributed tremendously toward our overall research efforts, said Ho.

Besides the materials for the BFF meniscus print, SpaceX CRS-20 will also carry 12 Passive Orbital Nutrient Delivery System, or PONDS, plant growth devices that Techshot co-developed with Tupperware Brands, and that was first prototyped by NASA Kennedy Space Center. According to company officials, they will be growing red romaine lettuce inthe devices, installed inside two of the space stations identical plant growth chambers each called Veggie. The PONDS units are being tested in two different configurations, each representing approaches refined from two previous flight tests. For this demonstration, lettuce is expected to grow in space for 21 days. Besides the hardware built and own, Techshot also manages the space stations most complex greenhouse, called the Advanced Plant Habitat, and it manages two on-orbit research furnaces called PFMI and SUBSA.

Techshot has been working hard to get samples ready in a lab at the Space Station Processing Facility at NASAs Kennedy Space Center.

Product assurance associate Keri Roeder, program manager Nathan Thomas and mechanical engineer Grant Vellinger prepared samples for Techshot customer Emory University (Image: Techshot)

Founded more than 30 years ago, Techshot operates its own commercial research equipment in space and serves as the manager of three NASA-owned ISS payloads. The company is also working on other space 3D printing technologies. Last fall they tested a laser-based 3D metal printer in zero gravity inside an aircraft performing parabolic arcs over the Gulf of Mexico (sometimes unofficially nicknamed the vomit comet). However, officials suggest that this technology is still at least a couple of years from Techshot launching it to the space station.

NASA and dozens of companies continue to work together to develop the means for astronauts and space explorers to endure life in orbit, the Moon and other planets. This vision is enthralling for anyone who ever dreamed of going to space, even hopeful of the next generations that will be able to experience space travel and conduct research work in microgravity. Perhaps we are too hopeful of the future, but with so much going on, its difficult not to be.

The launch on Friday will be the last SpaceX launch under the current NASA CRS-1 contract, yet SpaceX will continue performing resupply missions under a new CRS-2 contract beginning with the next scheduled resupply mission in August this year. To watch the launch, which is scheduled to take place at 11:50 p.m. EST on Friday, March 6, and capture of the spacecrafts arrival at the ISS, you can tune into NASA TV using the video below:

Little Tissue, Big Mission: Beating Heart Tissues to Ride Aboard The ISS – Newswise

Newswise Launching no earlier than March 6 at 11:50 PM EST, the Johns Hopkins University will send heart muscle tissues, contained in a specially-designed tissue chip the size of a small cellphone, up to the microgravity environment of the International Space Station (ISS) for one month of observation.

The project, led by Deok-Ho Kim, an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Medicine at The Johns Hopkins University and the projects principal investigator, will hopefully shed light on the aging process and adult heart health, and facilitate the development of treatments for heart muscle diseases.

Scientists already know that humans exposed to space experience changes similar to accelerated aging, so we hope the results can help us better understand and someday counteract the aging process, says Kim.

The researchers also hope the study will demystify why astronauts in space have reduced heart function and are more prone to serious irregular heartbeat; these results could help protect astronauts hearts on long missions in the future, as well as provide information on how to combat heart disease.

Kim and his team used human induced pluripotent stem cells to grow cardiomyocytes, or heart muscle cells, in a bioengineered, miniaturized tissue chip that mimics the function of the adult human heart. While other researchers have studied stem cell-derived heart muscle cells in space before, these studies relied on cells cultured on 2D surfaces, or flat planes, that arent representative of how cells exist and behave in the body, and are therefore underdeveloped compared to their counterparts in adult humans.

The teams tissue platform gives the advantage of the cells residing in a 3D environment, which will allow for better imitation of how cell signals and actions develop as they would in the human body. This 3D environment is possible thanks to a new scaffold biomaterial, or support structure which holds the tissues together, that accelerates development of the heart muscle cells within. This will allow the scientists to collect data useful for understanding the adult human body. Scientists could someday use this data and platform to develop new drugs, among many other applications.

Using a motion sensor magnet setup, the team will receive real-time measurements of how the tissues on the ISS beat. After about one month in space, the tissues will return to Earth and will be analyzed for any differences in gene expression and contraction caused by the extended stay in microgravity. Some of these tissues will be cultured for an additional week on Earth for the researchers to examine any recovery effects. The team will also have identical heart tissues on Earth at the University of Washington to serve as controls.

We hope that this project will give us meaningful data that we can use to understand the hearts structure and how it functions, so that we can improve the health of both astronauts and those down here on Earth, says Kim.

"The entire team is excited to see the results we get from this experiment. If successful, we will embark on the second phase of the study where tissues will be sent up to the ISS once again in two years, but this time, we will be able to test a variety of drugs to see which ones will best ameliorate the potentially harmful effects of microgravity on cardiac function," says Jonathan Tsui, a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at The Johns Hopkins University and a member of Kims lab.

This project is funded by the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) and the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) as part of the Tissue Chips in Space initiative in collaboration with the ISS U.S. National Laboratory.

Collaborators on this project include Eun Hyun Ahn of The Johns Hopkins University; Nathan Sniadecki and Alec Smith of The University of Washington; Peter Lee of Ohio State University; and Stefanie Countryman of Bioserve Space Technologies at the University of Colorado Boulder. For space flight the team has worked with BioServe Space Technologies to translate the ground platform into a space flight certified system.

New Genomics Clinic Will Enable Preventive Care, Precision Medicine – HealthITAnalytics.com

March 04, 2020 -Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) is launching a new Preventive Genomics Clinic that will help advance precision medicine and preventive care by leveraging genetic information.

The new clinic will be integrated with the primary care practices at MGH, and will aim to help patients better understand, prevent, and predict disease. MGH chose to establish the genomics clinic after receiving requests from providers and patients for greater use of genetics in clinical care.

We believe DNA testing will be a key piece of routine care in the future, said Amit V. Khera, MD, an MGH cardiologist and co-founder of the new clinic. But, in many cases, our PCPs were unsure which of the available genetic tests were most appropriate for their patients or how best to integrate that information into an individualized screening or treatment plan. Thats why it was so important for us to root ourselves within primary care from the start.

Common reasons for referral to the clinic include requests for interpretation of an existing genetic test result, concern about family history of disease, or an interest in learning about the risks and benefits of testing while still asymptomatic.

Patients meet with a genetic counselor and physician to gather personal and family history information. If patients do decide to proceed with genetic testing, the team reviews testing options, works with the patients health insurance to determine whether it would be covered, and coordinates with the patients care team to make a plan based on test results.

READ MORE: FDA Approvals Advance Precision Medicine, Genomics Treatments

What has been surprising is the majority of the tests weve ordered have been fully covered by medical insurance based on family history or other indications, said Renee Pelletier, lead genetic counselor of the new program. This speaks to the underutilization of appropriate genetic testing for our patients.

For patients who are truly asymptomatic and have no family history of disease, the clinic offers preventive genomics assessments that typically arent covered by insurance. This could include testing for the BRCA1 mutations, which signal very high risk for breast and ovarian cancer, as well as mutations that can lead to high cholesterol levels and risk for early heart attack. In both of these cases, treatment options exist that can help patients overcome these genetic risks.

The team has also launched an eConsult program, which allows any physician to request a review of his or her patients medical record by the Preventive Genomics Clinic. Staff at the clinic can then determine whether genetic testing or a clinic appointment would be beneficial for the patient. Additionally, the team can answer questions about ordering new genetic testing or interpreting prior genetic testing results.

In many cases, we are able to answer a key clinical question just based on review of medical records, said Leland Hull, MD, a primary care physician in the group. For others, we recommend they be seen in our clinic or one of the several subspecialty clinics available at MGH for more detailed evaluation.

In the future, the clinic expects to see patients who learn about high genetic risk from ongoing research studies, including the Partners HealthCare Biobank or the NIH All of Us Research Program. Over the next several years, these programs are expected to perform sequencing of more than 100,000 participants in the Boston area.

READ MORE: New Precision Medicine Program to Study Role of Genomics in Disease

As the healthcare industry has increasingly recognized the important role precision medicine and genomics can play in patient health, more organizations are supporting the integration of genetic testing with routine clinical care.

Recently, a group of stakeholders launched the Institute for Gene Therapies (IGT), which will aim to modernize the US regulatory and reimbursement framework to ensure gene therapies for patients who need them.

The incredible scientific advancements in this space present unique opportunities to directly improve and save the lives of patients suffering from debilitating diseases, said IGT Chairman and former Congressman Erik Paulsen.

This is not some far-off future patients are already benefiting from the first FDA-approved gene therapies. But we need policy to move faster toward this new reality where we can treat the causes of many diseases. The Institute for Gene Therapies and our members believe unique regulatory and reimbursement structures need to be established, novel development pathways need to be embraced and new value-based arrangements need to be tested.

With the launch of the Preventive Genomics Clinic, MGH will help further incorporate novel tests and treatments into everyday healthcare delivery.

Its exciting to know we can now support access to genomics long before disease develops, promoting the best outcomes for our patients, said Heidi Rehm, PhD, chief genomics officer at MGH. Our goal is to build this resource for our own community and collaborate with other hospitals across the country in defining the best models for this new type of preventive clinical care.

Patty Murray Grills Trump Administration Over Seattle’s Coronavirus Outbreak: This Is A Really Frightening Time – TheStranger.com

Washington's Democratic senator made it clear Tuesday that she isn't impressed by Trump's response to the crisis. C-SPAN

The administration has had months to prepare for this andif someone in the White House is actually in charge of responding to this crisis it would be news to anyone in my state, Murray said. This is really a frightening time. At least six people in my home state have already died from the virus and Im told we should expect more.

Tuesdays Senate hearing included bipartisan criticism of the federal governments handling of the crisis, particularly the way the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) fumbled the distribution of testing kits for the new coronavirus, which is technically referred to as SARS-CoV-2. The CDCs initial testing kits were found to be defective and the agency has only tested a few hundred people for the virus, according to data that was abruptly removed from the agencys website yesterday.

Senators during Tuesday's hearing repeatedly focused on a deadly outbreak at a long-term care facility in Kirkland. Sen. Richard Burr, a Republican from North Carolina, asked the CDCs principal director how the outbreak could have happened given the CDC knew that the virus was present in Washington state.

How can we have a situation like Washington state where we have known for up to six weeks, [with the virus] reaching possibly 1,500 individuals, yet we experienced what we have with this long term care facility how can that happen when we invested so much in being there early on? Burr said.

Dr. Anne Schuchat, the principal director of the CDC, did not specifically explain why testing was not broadened in Washington but said that the outbreak in Kirkland was tragic.

The situation in Washington state is tragic, Schuchat said. An outbreak in a long-term care facility is one of the things we have been worried about since day one.

Dr. Stephen Hahn, a commissioner with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), testified that the FDA is working with a private diagnostic test manufacturer to distribute 2,500 test kits able to complete 500 tests each, or over one million tests cumulatively, by the end of the week. Hahn was pressed by multiple Senators as to why he was confident that suddenly so many tests would be available when the government has so far struggled to get even a few hundred people tested. He offered a mild guarantee, saying that we have been in touch with this particular manufacturer over the last few days and we know them well.

But a report from The New York Times following Tuesday's hearing cast doubt on the government's ability to meet Hahn's prediction of one million tests by the end of the week.

Asked whether the government will have enough diagnostic tests to handle the outbreak, Schuchat said she was optimistic, but I want to remain humbled."

The CDC first distributed diagnostic tests around the country in February, but those tests were defective and unable to be used. The CDC eventually released a fix to the flawed kits, but that remedy was only sent to a small number of labs across the country, according to the New York Times.

The CDC also continued to use a restrictive set of criteria for who could receive the test, allowing people to be tested only if they had recently traveled to China or if they came in contact with a confirmed case of the new virus. That criteria was widened late last week to include travelers from affected areas other than China and for people who were hospitalized with unexplained flu-like symptoms.

The Food and Drug Administration further expanded testing on Saturday by allowing labs to do testing on their own, using their own diagnostic tests, instead of waiting for the CDC to provide replacements.

But the overall delay in testing has been blamed for hastening the spread of the deadly virus, particularly in the Seattle area. Genetic testing of two COVID-19 cases in Washington showed evidence the virus has been spreading in the Seattle region unnoticed for six weeks, according to genetic testing conducted by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.

Trevor Bedford, a researcher with Fred Hutchinson, has posted data supporting this hypothesis online and has blamed a lack of testing for accelerating the spread of the virus.

This lack of testing was a critical error and allowed an outbreak in Snohomish County and surroundings to grow to a sizable problem before it was even detected, Bedford said in a blog posted Monday.

Reasons why you’re gaining weight out of nowhere – The Advocate

Reasons why you're gaining weight out of nowhere

Its understandable when you gain a few pounds after a vacation or if you break your ankle and spend six weeks propped on the couch binge watching cooking shows (and the sweets to go with them).

But when you can't zip your jeans for no reason at all you swear youre not eating any more or exercising any less it can feel like theres some dark magic at play. You may find yourself standing on the bathroom scale, screaming into the void:

Most likely, theres something in your life thats shifted just enough to make a difference, but not so much that youd notice, says Dr. Alexandra Sowa, an obesity specialist and clinical instructor of medicine at NYU Langone Health. I see this all the time. You may not step on the scale for a while, and you feel like you havent changed anything, and all of a sudden you go to the doctors office and notice youve gained 10 or 20 pounds, she says.

But that doesnt mean its your destiny to go up another size every year. Here are some of the most likely reasons for unexplained weight gain, and how to stop it in its tracks.

If youve been battling weight issues for a while and none of your efforts are moving the needle, make an appointment with your primary care doctor or a weight-management physician, who can assess you for insulin resistance or prediabetes. Your doctor can also test you for hypothyroidism, in which your thyroid gland doesnt produce enough hormone, slowing down your metabolism and potentially leading to weight gain.

Insulin is the hormone that signals the body to pull glucose out of the bloodstream and store it in the muscles, liver and fat, explains Dr. Tirissa Reid, an obesity medicine specialist at Columbia University Medical Center and Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine. But when youre overweight, the cells dont recognize the insulin as well, so the pancreas has to pump out more and more sometimes two or three times the normal amount until the cells respond. This is also common in women who have polycystic ovary syndrom, a condition in which the egg follicles in the ovaries bunch together to form cysts.

These high insulin levels keep the body in storage mode and make weight loss more difficult, says Dr. Reid. The beginning of this road is insulin resistance when your pancreas is working overtime, but blood sugar levels are still normal. All that extra work wears out the pancreas until it can barely do the job of keeping the blood sugar in normal range. Left unchecked, insulin resistance can lead to prediabetes, in which blood-sugar levels are slightly elevated; if thats not treated, you can develop full-blown type-2 diabetes.

What you can do: The most effective way to reverse this trend is to eat a diet low in refined carbs and added sugars, and to become more physically active, since muscles respond better to insulin after exercise, says Dr. Reid.

She recommends either investing in a fitness tracker or simply using the one that comes with your phone. People hear you need 10,000 steps each day, which sounds intimidating, but you can also use it just to see where youre at and make doable increases, Dr. Reid says. If youre at 2,000 steps, try to go up to 2,500 a day next week and continue to increase. Swapping to foods with a lower glycemic index (GI) which means theyre digested more slowly, keeping blood-sugar levels steady is also important for controlling your insulin levels. Dr. Sowa recommends these lower-GI food swaps: riced cauliflower instead of white rice; zucchini spirals or shirataki noodles (made from plant fiber) instead of pasta; and pumpernickel or stone-ground whole wheat bread instead of white bread or bagels.

If youre up at night worrying about your aging parents or your kids, this can affect your metabolism. Stress and lack of sleep can cause a cascade of hormonal changes that change your metabolism and affect your sense of hunger and fullness, Dr. Sowa explains.

Stress pumps up the hormones ghrelin and cortisol, which increase your appetite and can make you crave carbs; at the same time, it dials down the hormone leptin, which helps you feel full. Not surprisingly, a 2018 Swedish study of 3,872 women over 20 years found the more stressed you are by work, the more likely you are to gain weight. Stress also affects your ability to get a good nights sleep, and we know that lack of sleep can also throw off your metabolism rates and hunger cues.

What you can do: You can manage your stress by downloading an app such that helps you work toward personal goals such as thinking positively and decreasing anxiety by sending you meditations and visualizations to do throughout the day. To sleep more soundly, you already know you should put down your phone, computer and iPad an hour before bedtime, but research shows that shutting out all light including that sliver of moon through your window can help with both sleep and metabolism. A study at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine found that after subjects spent just one night of sleeping in a room with dim light, insulin levels the next morning were significantly higher than those who slept in complete darkness, potentially affecting metabolism rates. So consider investing in some good blackout curtains.

Were not 100% sure why, but its believed that histamines, chemicals produced by your immune system to fight allergens, have a role in appetite control, says Dr. Reid. That means that antihistamines may cause you to eat more, she says. A study from Yale University confirmed that there is a correlation between regular prescription antihistamine use and obesity. Dr. Reid points out that some antihistamines such as Benadryl also cause drowsiness, which could make you less apt to exercise.

What you can do: If you suffer from seasonal allergies and are constantly taking antihistamines, talk to your allergist about alternative treatments such as nasal steroid sprays, nasal antihistamines (which have less absorption into the bloodstream, and therefore less effect on hunger), leukotriene inhibitors such as Singulair or allergy shots, suggests Dr. Jeffrey Demain, founder of the Allergy Asthma and Immunology Center of Alaska. He also says that managing your environment using a HEPA filter, washing your sheets frequently in hot water and keeping pets out of your bedroom can help reduce the need for allergy medication. While youre at it, do an inventory of any prescription medications youre taking that are known to cause weight gain (including certain antidepressants, beta blockers, corticosteroids and the birth control shot) and discuss with your doctor if there are equally effective alternatives that dont affect weight, says Dr. Reid.

Anyone whos ever sat in a vinyl booth staring down a big bowl of pasta knows that portion sizes in America are large. But research from the University of Liverpool published in 2018 found after being served large-size meals outside the home, people tend to serve themselves larger portions up to a week later, meaning supersizing appears to be normalized, says Dr. Lisa R. Young, author of Finally Full, Finally Slim.

Here's what to do: First, Young suggests you spend a few days getting a reality check on how much food youre actually eating at each meal. When you pour the cereal in the bowl in the morning, pour it back into a measuring cup. What you thought was one cup might actually be three cups, especially if youre using a large bowl, she says.

Also, instead of relying on a government agency (or the chef at your favorite restaurant) at to tell you how much to eat, learn to listen to your own body, says Young. Serve yourself just one modest portion on a small plate, and when youre done, wait 20 minutes, she says. It takes that long for the hormones in your belly to reach your brain and tell it youre full. If you get to 20 minutes and your stomach is grumbling, have a few more bites.

Lets say you switched jobs recently, and dinner is now at 9 p.m. instead of 6:30. Or your new habit of streaming Neflix until the wee hours also involves snacking well past midnight. Even if youre not eating more, per se, this change might account for the extra pounds.

Theres a delicate balance between your circadian rhythm (the way your body and brain respond to the daily cues of daylight and darkness) and your calorie intake. That can mean that same sandwich that you eat at lunchtime may actually cause more of a weight gain when eaten at night. A 2017 study at Brigham and Womens Hospital found when college students ate food closer to their bedtime and therefore closer to when the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin was released they had higher percentages of body fat and a higher body-mass index. The researchers theorize this is because the amount of energy your body uses to digest and metabolize food drops as your inner clock tells it to get ready to snooze.

What you can do: There are a few life hacks to keep the late-night snacking to a minimum. Dr. Sowa suggests you commit to writing down every bite you eat after dinner: Whether its on a sticky pad or on an app, keeping track of what youre eating, how much youre eating and how youre feeling when you eat it will hold you accountable for the calories, and it will also help you figure out if youre truly hungry or just bored, she says. She also suggests capping off your evening meal with a brain-and-heart-healthy tablespoon of fish oil. Its a healthy fat that coats your stomach and makes you feel less hungry later, she says.

Each birthday you celebrate brings on one undeniable change: your basal resting metabolism (the rate at which your body at rest burns the energy you take in from food) slows down. Its not a dramatic drop, says Dr. Cheskin. But as you age, youre probably also getting less active and more tired, and your body tends to lose muscle mass, which burns calories more efficiently than fat. So even if youre eating the exact same amount of food as you did when you were younger, your body is simply not burning it off as effectively as it did during the glory days of your 20s.

Here's what to do: You can only budge your BMR a little, but there are a few things you can do to make the math work in your favor. The first is to build up your calorie-burning muscle, says fitness expert Dr. Michele Olson, a professor of sports science and physical education at Huntingdon College. Keep up cardio three times a week for 30 minutes, but add challenging weight training on top of that, she says.

Another metabolism-boosting strategy: Replace some of the carbohydrates in your diet with proteins, which take more energy to digest, therefore burning off more calories through diet-induced thermogenesis, as well as making you feel fuller for longer. Dr. Sowa suggests you eat about 100 grams of protein over the course of the day, filling your plate with lean chicken, fish, shrimp or plant-based proteins such as garbanzo beans, tempeh and edamame, to give your meals more metabolism bang for your buck. This may only add up to a weight loss of a few pounds per year, but combined with exercise, the cumulative effect can be significant, says Dr. Sowa.
